Chapter 14
âHow was your mom this morning?â Dylan asked Chloe, who was doing her homework at the kitchen table. She looked up, her hand paused as she stopped coloring the map she was working on. âShe was like she is every day.â
Dylan nodded, more to himself than anything else. He'd called Merry at work today to tell her that he would pick Chloe up from school, because he finished early at the store and Laura was happy to stay late, but the truth was, he didn't want Merry to fix dinner when she got back from work. He had noticed that she had been stressed out a lot these past few days, and he chalked it up to her being busy in her job at the department store. With Christmas approaching, she had started to do longer hours, and because she only worked three days, it seemed that she tried to finish everything in those three days.
On top of that, she had the advertising for the store to take care of. Despite her saying she could handle it, he could see that she was starting to struggle.
He didnât want her to struggle. It was bad enough him being stressed about the kiln, but they both couldnât be like that.
As for himself, heâd needed to step away from the gift store today and do something else to take his mind off the troubles which seemed to be springing up left, right and center.
The guy who had come earlier today to take a look at his kiln informed him that he needed a new part, and even thought he would order the part immediately, the part was out of stock and wouldnât arrive until early next week.
It left a month to his wedding. He wanted to stop working at least a few days, if not a whole week, before his wedding day, but at this rate, if he was to fulfil the vase order, he need to work flat out right up until the wedding.
The home furnishings store had placed an order for vases for December, and it was as big as the November order.
He was swamped, but he didnât want to call the manager and tell him that he would have difficulty in meeting the November order and that he couldnât even begin to think about the December order.
This kiln nightmare had mushroomed into a production problem which messed up his orders, his wedding, his mood. Thank goodness for the wedding. It seemed to be the only bright beacon of something good on the horizon.
When the guy had left, Dylan had called Merry to tell her that he'd be making dinner and that he would pick Chloe up from school.
It was probably just as well that he did because Merry sounded stressed out herself. She couldn't talk much, and she thanked him, then told him she would work a little later than usual, if it was fine by him.
Of course it was fine by him.
He didn't mind being the house husband tonight.
